Hanna Somatic Education (HSE), also called Hanna Somatics or Clinical Somatics, is a highly effective form of neuromuscular, mind-body movement re-education. It addresses the root cause of most chronic muscular pain: the brain and how it senses and coordinates muscles and movement.
By learning to regain awareness, sensation, and voluntary control of your muscles through movement, the brain remembers how to relax and move muscles correctly. This sensory-motor training improves muscle function and body awareness.
Hanna Somatic Education provides a safe, gentle, and practical approach to reversing chronic pain. It is the only method that specifically targets Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA), a condition in which muscles remain chronically tight due to repeated reflexive responses to stress, injuries, surgeries, repetitive tasks, or ongoing emotional tension.
When muscles remain contracted over time, they form patterns that can lead to chronic pain in the back, neck, shoulders, and hips, joint stiffness, limited mobility, poor posture, shallow breathing, and even uneven leg length.
HSE is especially effective for relieving pain and movement difficulties related to common conditions such as headaches, stiff or sore muscles and joints, fatigue, posture problems, breathing difficulties, movement impairments, trauma or whiplash, back pain, and repetitive strain injuries.
HSE helps you reverse chronic muscle pain by regaining sensory awareness and voluntary control of movement. This can lead to significant, lasting improvements in comfort, movement quality, posture, and overall physical appearance.
Ultimately, HSE helps you move with ease and comfort while enjoying freedom from pain.
Why Hanna Somatic Education is Different
HSE works at the root of most chronic muscular pain: the brain. Just as the brain can learn new skills, like riding a bike, it can also learn habits that create tension and imbalance. Because the brain controls the muscles, it is central to teaching them how to relax, release, and move freely again.
Here are a few ways HSE stands apart from other approaches like physical therapy, massage, surgery, stretching, acupuncture, or medication
Focus on Whole-Body Patterns
Instead of targeting only the area that hurts, HSE looks at patterns of muscle contraction across the entire body. Tightness in the core can affect hips, knees, feet, and even the neck
Active Participation
Unlike massage or passive therapies, lasting change happens when you actively engage your muscles. You are the one who relearns how to release chronic tension, using your brain to restore control and coordination
Pandiculation: The Key Technique
The core of HSE is a movement called ''Pandiculation'', the same way cats stretch and release their muscles multiple times a day. By consciously contracting and then slowly releasing muscles, you reset muscle length at the brain level, regain voluntary control, relieve pain, and improve mobility. More about Pandiculation
